From a teaspoonful in your hot cuppa to a topical DIY skincare ingredient, honey is a revered weapon in the arsenals of beauty enthusiasts and experts alike. And, it garners the vote of megastar and mother Kareena Kapoor Khan, too.
In an interview with Vogue, the actor revealed how she equips honey as a DIY skincare ingredient, “I don’t rely on facials; for me the best home remedy is honey—it cleans and softens my skin. I apply a light layer [of honey] to my skin, massage it for a few minutes and then wash it off.”
Honey is one of nature’s most beneficial skincare remedies, thanks to its antibacterial and antiseptic abilities. That’s why it can be ideal for acne-prone, oily skin or even autoimmune skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It’s also classified as a humectant meaning it can lock in moisture and hydrate the skin without making it oily or greasy. In its raw form, it can also aid in the skin cell healing process and reduce inflammation. I like Kareena Kapoor Khan and us, you’re convinced of this ingredient’s prowess, here are some DIY honey skincare recipes to try stat.
Here’s how you can use honey in your skincare DIY recipes
1) Brightening and soothing face mask
Mix a teaspoon of honey, rosewater and Multani Mitti each till you achieve a paste-like consistency and then apply to the face and neck as a face mask. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and rinse with water upon drying. This formula helps in reducing redness or inflammation on irritated skin and removes the dead skin cells which cause the skin to look dehydrated and dull. Alternatively, a more natural application includes using raw unpasteurised honey or manuka honey on a freshly washed face, you can also choose to dilute it with water.
2) Massage oil for calming and moisturising
For an at-home spa experience, make a DIY massage oil with honey as the hero ingredient. Mix 1 teaspoon of honey and olive oil each to create a mixture and apply it on the skin accompanied by a gentle facial massage. A sensorial relaxing feeling is bound to take over during the process and upon rinsing, it reveals a deeply hydrated and nourished visage. Both honey and olive oil are hydration heroes and will rid your skin of any dryness.
3) Antimicrobial facial paste
Honey’s superior quality lies in its antimicrobial nature–it can regulate the bacteria on the skin and improve skin cell turnover. To avail of its benefits mix three teaspoons of raw honey with one teaspoon of fresh ground cinnamon to create a powerful antioxidant face mask. Apply on the face and leave it on for 8-10 minutes, then rinse it with lukewarm water.
As a thumb-hand rule, it’s advised to do a patch test before applying any DIY honey skin care remedies.
