History of Tell a Joke Day
While never acknowledged by a formal government as a full holiday, Tell a Joke Day has been celebrated worldwide since jokes began. You know, all the way back in 1900 B.C. Apparently it was a fart joke by a person in Sumer, although if they had said ‘pull my finger’ and farted, talk about triggering the shot heard around the world forever!
Joking aside, or in this case returned to the forefront, jokes and wordplay like this have been around for a long time. Riddles were meant to strengthen the mind and help learn to puzzle things out on your own, but jokes came about as a way to laugh no matter where you were, no matter the reason.
How to celebrate Tell a Joke Day
To truly celebrate Tell a Joke Day, let us delve into what a joke actually is. Linguist Robert Hetzron used this definition, and it fits this perfectly:
“A joke is a short humorous piece of oral literature in which the funniness culminates in the final sentence, called the punchline… In fact, the main condition is that the tension should reach its highest level at the very end. No continuation relieving the tension should be added.”
What to take out of that? Not to take your jokes too seriously. It seems he might have been trying to enlighten folk about jokes, and where they come from, what makes a good joke and more, but this is truly a way to kill the joke. Alright, that may have been a bit much from me. But really, set up the punchline with the rest of the joke before, and you will have a masterpiece.
After all, if the punchline is funny, and the joke sets people up to understand it, there you go. Just figure out a joke or three that work best for you, slide in there and get them told, and laugh at other folks jokes as well. You never do truly know where the next joke will come from, or what that joke will be, but Tell a Joke Day should be a riot of laughter for everyone involved!
Don’t take telling your jokes too seriously! If you slip up and deliver your joke incorrectly, don’t worry. Even if people start laughing, that was the aim anyway right, so you still reached your end goal! Don’t be too hard on yourself. After all, not everyone finds the same thing funny. So, if someone does not laugh at your joke, it could purely be because they do not have the same sense of humor as you! After all, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing, wouldn’t it?
You can also spend some time reading up on different jokes online. There are so many different websites with funny jokes! You can also get books that are filled with jokes as well. Do a bit of digging on social media too. You are bound to find plenty of humorous jokes that will keep you laughing on this day, which is what it is all about. Make sure to share any jokes that you like with your friends, followers, and family members. After all, if it made you laugh, it is going to make other people smile and laugh as well, right?
