Avoid long, hot showers

While long, hot showers are an ultimate bliss and feel so satisfying, they are very harmful to skin and hair. Hot showers strip your hair and skin of moisture. The consequences are even more pronounced if you have coloured hair. The colours wash off faster and leave your hair looking drab.

Use colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner

To enhance the shine and vibrancy of your carefully done hair, it’s advisable to use shampoos and conditioners formulated especially for coloured hair. They are much more gentle and infuse your hair with nutrients that lock the colour. Also, reduce the frequency of washing your hair and use sulphate-free products.

Nourish your hair

Colour-treated hair needs extra TLC and a deep conditioning mask once a week will sort your hair woes for good. This will keep your hair soft, smooth and manageable as well as keep the hair colour looking fresh and vibrant.

Take care while swimming

While it might not be possible to avoid swimming completely, good hair care and proper precautions can help with fading colour and shine. Use a leave-in conditioner before going swimming and use a good quality swimming cap to protect your strands. The chlorine in pool water can bleach your hair, so some extra care is imperative if you want your colour to last.

Minimize heat styling

Overuse of heat styling and hot tools is a strict no-no if you don’t want to end up with faded and parched tresses. Minimize straightening and blow-drying, and use a heat protectant spray or serum each time you style your hair.

Cover up your hair

Excess sun exposure can ruin the hair colour. So using hats, scarves and umbrellas can reduce the extent of damage due to UV rays. Also, tie up your hair to prevent the ends from being frayed.
